Malacca is located on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia facing the Straits of Malacca, about 147 km (92 mi) from Kuala Lumpur. In the 14th century Malacca became a prosperous nerve center of trade between the East and the West, and eventually became an empire. From 1511, the Portuguese, the Dutch and later the British, took control of the empire until 1957 when Malaysia became independent. A trip to Malacca is like traveling through history. As the visitor walks the narrow streets, visit old temples, mosques and medieval fortresses, or lingers among ancient ruins and epitaphs, Malacca's history will captivate and enchant.

Aside from the famous ruins, Malacca is famous for its mix of cultures and its variety of local delicious cuisine. Malay food, Indian food, Chinese food, Portuguese food and Baba Nyonya food are in abundance.

Malacca is also famous for its islands like Pulau Besar, Pulau Upeh and Air Keroh. All these islands are popular beach destinations, which boast long sandy beaches and are paradise for all kinds of water sport activities.
