Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 tropical islands in the Andaman Sea, just south of Thailand, and 30 km (19 mi) off the mainland coast of northwestern Peninsular Malaysia. By far the largest of the islands is Pulau Langkawi (Langkawi Island) with an area of 478,5 sq km and an estimated population of around 100,000. The only other inhabited island is Pulau Tuba. The smallest of the islands are atolls roughly the size of an ordinary house.
Langkawi Island is fringed with long, sandy beaches, and the interior consists of jungle-clad hills and picturesque paddy-fields. The most popular beach is Pentai Cenang on the southwestern tip of the island, 2 km long. It features fine powdery sand and many beachfront restaurants and bars. Pantai Tengah beach is a peaceful alternative, it is located just south of Pantai Cenang only separated by a small cape. Tanjung Rhu beach is at the northernmost tip of the island and features limestone caves, mangroves, waterways, and sandy beaches, it is a nature lover's paradise. Datai Bay is where the most expensive resorts are located.
The sea around Langkawi is perfect to enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling. Marine life in Langkawi waters is prolific, thanks to strict enforcement of environmental laws. Fish like black tip sharks, barracudas and giant groupers are regular sighted. Coral is rich, consisting both of soft and hard corals. Pulau Payar Marine Park, located near Langkawi Island, is tailormade for scuba diving and snorkeling. Apart from these two sports; angeling, fishing and swimming can also be enjoyed in Langkawi.
The main town and the capital as well as the largest city of the islands is Kuah. Lankawi was declared an duty-free zone in 1986 so all goods sold on the island is without government tax or other duties. Not surprisingly shopping complexes dominate Kuah, and many go to Langkawi for the tax free shopping, but you have to stay for a minimum of 48 hours to be able to take advantage of this.
Both Malaysia Airways and Air Asia have twice daily flights to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur, which lands at Langkawi International Airport. There are also direct flights from Penang and Singapore. Langkawi is also accessible by boat from Georgetown, Kuala Perlis, Kuala Kedah and Satun in Thailand.
